There are no magic bullets to solve our global crises; the solutions are to be found through synergies between multiple technologies and policies. The good news is that the technologies exist but the bad news is that such synergies are achieved through ‘Whole System Design’ - and we are very bad at ‘Whole System Design’! Western culture has achieved what it has achieved by breaking problems up into bite-sized chunks and solving them in isolation. However, if we want to achieve, sustainably, the degree of mobility that the ‘20th century personal freedom machine’ has granted us, we must design at a whole system level. This means not only that the design of the vehicle cannot be separated from its sale and support, the ownership model and the refuelling infrastructure, but also the entire energy strategy. My focus is on the transport element of the problem but my talk will necessarily link into energy strategy, with hydrogen being the main link between the two.
