Schools and Students

There is plenty that schools and students can do to make life in the Wychwood Forest area more sustainable. For example your school can

  • Ask us to come and give a talk at your school
  • Join the eco-schools group
  • Become part of Schools for Environmental Change, set up by students from local schools including Kingham, Chipping Norton, Burford and Cokethorpe (contact steve@kingham-hill.oxon.sch.uk 07776 064810 )
  • Join the Wychwood Network Facebook Group

Also you can make a difference whatever your age (Ryan Hreljac was only seven years old when he started Ryan’s Well, a charity that raised millions of dollars to give clean water to thousands of people in Africa).

Things that you can do yourself

  • Plant some trees. All you need is a few acorns or conkers. Even better persuade your local village or community to plant a community wood (this has already happened in several villages in the Wychwood Forest including Hailey, Leafield and Shipton)
  • Grow some of your own food. Fruit vegetables and herbs are not difficult to grow and can give you a supply of fresh food. Even if you only have a small garden, you can make a space with a stack of old tyres filled with earth.
  • Buy local food and support local businesses. See our directory page or Food Page for details
  • If you have a large garden, turn part of it into a wild place. This is good for butterflies and other insects, birds and wildflowers.
  • Save energy. There are lots of ways to do this. For more details see our Energy page.
  • Recycle more. See our Waste Page for more details
  • Learn about what is happening in your area. If you don’t like the sound of it, make a protest poster and stick it in your window.
  • Have a party or a gig or other gathering to raise money and awareness. If you want help organising it, contact us.
  • Start a Fair trade stall in your canteen or dinner hall
  • Join one of the local organisations promoting sustainability and protecting our environment
